Estate: Working in his parents’ restaurant, wine bar and baking, Leonardo Sassi “found himself drawn to the countryside and a desire to dive into rehabilitating his family’s old vines while planting new parcels in an effort to start the next chapter of his life”. Leo collaborated with visionary, natural winemaker and Umbrian native, Danilo Marcucci. The small, 3 hectare estate is located in Sabina, in Lazio, near the border with Umbria. 2017 is the first vintage for the estate.
Winemaking: Vineyards are farmed organically and with minimal intervention. Skin maceration for 5 days, fermented with indigenous easts in small open top resin tanks. Aged in fiberglass. Unfiltered, no sulphur added.
Tasting Notes: Red violet in colour with aromas of morello cherry, baked cherry, wildflowers, truffle, forest floor, peppery spice and a wisp of eucalyptus. Juicy cherry, pomegranate, raspberry and earth fold over a spicy core of smoky chili pepper, framed by fresh acidity and good tannins. Tangy fruit and spice linger between each sip.
