Estate: Founded in 1961 by Margret Etten Cantarelli, Montemelino is located in the northern hills above Lake Trasimeno, in Tuoro, Umbria. The 8 hectares of vineyards are devoted to the traditional and native grapes of their tiny Colli del Trasimeno DOC; Grechetto, Malvasia, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Gamay del Trasimeno [Cannonau/Grenache]. Margaret and her husband Guido have passed the reins to their daughter, Sabina. For a detailed look at the estate, check out their bio page on Selection Naturel’s [their US importer] site here.
Winemaking: The estate is farmed organically and sustainably. Vineyards have alluvial soils mixed with clay and limestone, located at around 300 meters above sea level.
Tasting Notes: Light coral in colour, with delicate aromas of red berries, wildflowers, earth, herbs, grapefruit and a wisp of spice. Light and airy, with flavours mirroring the aromas. Fresh acidity fuses with tart fruit on the dry finish. Simple, pure and easy drinking.
