Foradori ‘Lezèr’ Vigneti delle Dolomiti Rosso IGT 2018

Estate: A brief synopsis of pioneering, iconic winemaker Elisabetta Foradori isn’t really possible. She dedicated herself to restoring the Teroldego grape and biodynamic approach to uniting nature and winemaking. Even now, with her son Emilio Zierock at the helm, she still continues transforming vineyards and crafting new wines. Lezèr [meaning ‘light’ in local Trentino dialect], was born out of calamity. In 2017 a hailstorm in late summer wiped out the majority of the grapes used for the entry level Teroldego. The grapes that could be salvaged were given a short maceration and tuned into the light bodied Lezèr. [The 2017 label depicts a farmer on a tractor battling a hailstorm.]

Moving ahead to 2018, Lezèr has transformed into a project, not just a wine. Theo and Emilio wanted “something that’s great for spring and summer, something that’s fun and easy to drink”. In love with the distinctive light red from Schiava from Alto Adige, [that isn’t grown at their Trentino estate], they decided to continue experimenting. The 2018 Lezèr is the result of “around 20 different experiments from the home vineyards, of which three quarters went into the final blend. Some went into amphorae, some into oak, some into steel, some into cement, some with the floating cap method and others with direct press.” Jungle foliage depicted on the label are a nod to the hot conditions of 2018, as well as the phrase “Annata Tropicale” or the “Tropical Vintage”.

Tasting Notes: Transparent ruby red in colour with aromas of strawberry, cherry, raspberry, white pepper and dash of funky earth. An earthy undercurrent runs beneath silky layers of cherry, raspberry and strawberry dusted with white pepper. Black tea tannins and fresh acidity fuse with red fruit and spice on the crisp finish. Simple, pure, well composed and super easy drinking.
