Estate: Located in northern Italy, on the north-south route that cuts across the Alps in the Isarco Valley of Alto Adige, the estate and castle have a long history dating back to the middle ages. The Prackwieser family has been growing grapes there for over 200 years. Dedicated to preserving the natural equilibrium of the land, in 2000, Markus Prackwieser took over the reins of the estate from his father.
The vineyards are farmed organically, sustainably and with low intervention. Vineyards are on steep slopes 400 to 500 metres above sea level with alluvial gravel, and lime-rich moraine over on solid Bozen quartz porphyry rock. During the day the area receives the moderating influence of the Ora, a wind that blows in from Lake Garda, and “at night the fall winds from the Dolomites cool the grapevines, lending that special fresh note to the complex wines”.
Philosophy: “I want to be loyal to my ideals and maintain the balance between tradition and innovation. It is my aim to offer my clients a distinctive, stimulating wine that expresses the place and people who brought it forth.”
Winemaking: Fermented in stainless steel tanks then transferred to old Slavonian wood barrels to settle for around 7 months before bottling.
Tasting Notes: Transparent ruby red in colour with aromas of violet, rose, hibiscus, strawberry, raspberry, soft spice and earthy minerality. Silky cherry, strawberry, raspberry, tobacco and earth are framed by light black tea tannins and fresh acidity. Dark red fruit, soft spice, bramble and a floral trace diffuse across the lengthy finish. Pure, gluggable and versatile.
