Winery: Founded in 2014, Il Vinco is a collaboration between friends Daniele Manoni, Marco Fucini, and Nicola Brenciaglia. [The name Il Vinco comes from the willow branch used to tie the vines to stakes in the vineyard.] One of their main objectives was to revitalize and preserve the indigenous Canaiolo Nero vines in the area. The vineyards are on the southern slopes of the volcanic Lago di Bolsena, in Montefiascone, in the Lazio region of central Italy. Progressive winemaker and fellow Lazio native Andrea Occhipinti allows them the use of his cellar.
Winemaking: Vines are farmed organically and as of 2017 biodynamically. Low intervention is practiced in both the vineyard and cellar. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks for 8 days, then transferred to stainless vats where it rests for three months before release. Minimal SO2 (26mg/l) is added at bottling.
Tasting Notes: Garnet in colour, with floral driven aromatics accented by wild berries and earth. Wisps of smoky earth wrap around candied rose and violet, wild cherry, peppery spice and Rose Royce funk. Fresh acidity and silky tannins highlight tangy fruit and spice on the lengthy finish. Rustic, engaging and distinctive.
