Estate: Located in Serralunga d’Alba, in the Langhe region of Piemonte, Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria. The land was formerly part of the Opera Pia Barolo, with its vineyards worked by sharecroppers [schiavenza in the local dialect]. Today the estate is headed by the 2nd generation, winemaking sisters, Enrica and Maura Alessandria, along with their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma. The 9.2 hectares in Serralunga, and a small plot in Monforte d’Alba are farmed biodynamically.
Winemaking: Grapes are from different vineyards in in Serralunga d’Alba, at altitudes of 370-400 meters, in loamy and calcareous soils. The oldest vines were planted in 1965, the youngest in 2006. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement vats, unfined, with a light filtering.
Tasting Notes: Dark red-violet in colour with aromas of violet, blackberry, cherry, blueberry, earth and soft spice. Rich cherry, black currant, plum, brambly wild berries, white pepper and earth are framed by fresh acidity and soft tannins. A trace of espresso compliments almond and dark fruit on the dry lengthy finish. Plush with an elegant edge.
