Estate: Quinta Sao João Batista is located in Brogueira, 59 miles northeast of Lisbon. The estate is located near the Tagus River and within the Natural Reserve and Animal Sanctuary. The river is credited with the excellent soil and microclimate of the roughly 76 hectares of vineyards. ‘Rabisco’ means scratch in Portuguese and is in reference to the stork sketch on the label. All types of birds pass thru the sanctuary on migration routes, most notably storks that make their winter nests by the vineyards.
Winemaking: Vineyards are sustainably farmed. Aged for 9 months in new French oak barriques.
Tasting Notes: Dark red-violet in colour with aromas of dark fruit, earth, jalapeño, vanilla and cigar box spice. Layers of jammy blackberry, cherry, blueberry along with tobacco and oak are framed by good acidity and plush tannins. Smoky cedar, vanilla and a dash of crushed black peppercorn infuse the lengthy finish.
