Estate: Suertes del Marques is a family winery that has been producing wines since 2006. Owner Jonatan Garcia Lima, “is part of the growing breed of intensely passionate young Spanish producers capitalising on the heritage vines and allowing the volcanic soils to speak through his eloquent, mineral driven wines”. The 11 hectares of vineyards are located on the slopes of Teide, an active volcano in the northern part of Tenerife, in the Valle de la Orotava appellation, which is one of the oldest winemaking regions in the Canary Islands. The estate is widely recognized as the best on Tenerife.
Winemaking: Low intervention, organic and sustainable practices are used in both the vineyards and cellar. 7 Fuentes is composed of 35 plots from area winegrowers and from the estate vineyards with vines ranging from 10 to 180 years old, at elevations 250 to 800 meters above sea level, in volcanic soils. Each plot is vinified separately. Fermented in small stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeast and a short, gentle maceration. About 20% of the cuvee is aged in neutral 500L French oak demi-muids with the remainder in concrete. No fining or filtration.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, very aromatic, with chipotle pepper, violet, cherry, strawberry, balsamic, honey, smoky herbs and a wisp of baking spice. Tasting very similar to all of those amazing aromas, with chipotle pepper stuffed with cherry, pomegranate, black cherry and a trace of wildflowers, accented by silky tannins and lively acidity. A pinch of paprika, cardamom and saffron emerge on the lengthy, smoky finish. Engaging and charismatic, a smoky synthesis of savoury and sweet spice, herbs and fruit that is superb on its own or as a companion to a wide variety of hearty dishes.
