Estate: Vito Lauria’s grandfather began producing wines in Alcamo, the heart of northwestern Sicily in1958, but was forced to cease production in 1993 due to economic hardship. Determined to revitalize his grandfather’s estate, Vito graduated from the University of Udine in 2003 with a degree in Enology and Viticulture, followed by 5 years of working with other winemakers. During that time, he also worked on restoring his family estate. His first vintage was in 2010, released under the new winery name of Vino Lauria. The estate is farmed using low intervention, organic, and biodynamic methods. He is known for crafting wines of elegance and balance.
Philosophy: “Vino Lauria is the result of an enamored gaze upon one’s homeland and the desire to explore and reinterpret it’s richness and uniqueness. A philosophy that goes far beyond the expected to find and produce products that are innovative and genuine.”
Winemaking: Frappato is the only grape of the wines made that is not grown on the estate. Vineyards are instead in sandy soil “from the beaches of Scoglitti, in the area of Ragusa, in Vittoria. It’s from these “lean” lands which it owes its attractively weak color and its lightness”. Aged for 8 months in stainless steel tanks.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour with aromas of berry pie filling, grilled herbs, summer earth, wild flowers and a trace of sea spray. Concentrated, tangy cherry, strawberry, black cherry, cranberry and a trace of orange zest are accented by bright acidity and easy tannins. Tart fruit and smoky minerality linger between each plush sip. Lovely on its own, easy to pair with a wide variety of dishes.
