Estate: An iconic Barolo estate, GD Vajra was founded in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico Vajra with the vineyards his family cultivated since the 1920’s. The estate is located in Vergne, the highest village of Barolo in northwest Italy and consist of 40 hectares of vines, 10 of which are dedicated to Nebbiolo. Today, the estate is run by Giuseppe’s son Aldo and his wife Milena, along with their children, the next generation of Vajra winemakers. Aldo Vajra is renowned as “the most modern of the traditionalists and the most traditional of the modernists”. His wines are famed for their intensity, purity of flavour and elegance.
Winemaking: Vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably. Grapes are from vines planted between 1982-2002, in limestone and marl soils. Fermented in stainless steel tanks “for 6-10 days at 30°C with frequent pumping over for maximum extraction of colour and tannin. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks until the following spring”.
Tasting Notes: Dark red violet in colour with aromas of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, peppery spice and dusty earth. Wooly tannins, fresh acidity and spice frame velvety layers of blackberry, black cherry, cherry and raspberry. Fruit and spice linger on the dry, lengthy, delightfully bitter, distinctive finish. Velvety and addictive, it will disappear far more swiftly than you think.
