Estate: 4th generation winemaker Andi Knauss took over his family’s estate in 2004. The 15 hectares of vines are spread across 18 different plots in the hills around the village of Strümpfelbach, in southwestern Germany. The vineyards are 300-400 meters above sea level, with sedimentary limestone soils that vary from site to site. Andi is known for his expressive sparkling wines with zero dosage, no additional additives, including yeast, sulphur or sugar.
Brand: La Boutanche is a collaboration between US importer Selection Massale and a handful of their producers. Their goal is to bring a $20 or under wine with “native yeast fermentations, low or zero SO2 additions, and the like; basically pure unadulterated glou glou that we could put into a liter-sized screw-top bottle and would be a great introduction to natural wine”.
Winemaking: Natural and organic methods are used in both the vineyards and cellar. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts, sulphur is used minimally or not at all. Grapes are from young vines, direct-pressed into stainless steel tanks.
Tasting Notes: Coral pink in colour with aromas of strawberry, dried flowers and rain-washed slate. Silky strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate are accented by a pop of citrus acidity. The mineral driven finish zips with red grapefruit. Refreshing, light and wonderfully gluggable.
