Estate: The Giuseppe Rinaldi estate is famed for crafting some of the greatest Barolo. Iconic, legendary, 5th generation winemaker Giuseppe “Beppo” Rinaldi is renowned for his strict adherence to traditional methods, “his wines are monuments to this approach—powerfully structured, hauntingly perfumed, very slow to mature and completely without concession to current fashion”. In recent years his daughters Carlotta and Marta have joined him at the helm. [For a detailed discussion on the winery with many photos, check out Ken Vastola’s article here over at Fine Wine Geek.]
Winemaking: The estate farms organically, all wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts. As other varietals are not allowed in the Barolo region, and I enjoyed this bottle in Italy, there is not an appellation listed on the label.
Tasting Notes: Ruby red in colour with aromas of wild berries, summer flowers and earthy spice. Saturated with red fruits; strawberry raspberry tart cherry and sour cherry. Fresh acidity compliments the clean, dry spicy finish. Mercurial and ethereal, with a tannic bite that will chase you down, a wine that leaves you dreaming of more.
