Brand: The Poggio Anima brand is a collaboration between “Montalcino Superstar” Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and his US importer, Vine Street Imports. Riccardo Campinoti is a staunch believer in that wine is made in the vineyard, not the winery. ‘Belial’ represents lawlessness and roughly translates to ‘without yoke’ in Hebrew. The name was chosen as a statement regarding “what has come to be known as ‘Supertuscans’ or ‘IGT’ is simply lawless”, with “People blending international varietals with indigenous varietals, etc”.
Philosophy: “To source the best vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines, nor leftover juice from a winery, but long term contracts with reputable growers.”
Winemaking: Grapes were hand harvested from organically farmed, 25-45 year old vines in a single vineyard with Pliocene rocky red clay soil, located near Siena, in the Chianti Colli Senesi zone of Tuscany. Fermented in stainless steel, aged for 8 months, 90% in stainless steel, 10% in neutral Slavonian botti.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, with inviting aromas of dark berries, carnation petal, black pepper and thyme. Black cherry, blackberry, cherry, cranberry and earth with a streak of Mediterranean herbs are accented by silky green tea tannins and fresh acidity. Crushed white peppercorn dusted black cherry lingers on the lengthy, dry finish. An engaging sip and fantastic value, wonderful on its own or with a wide variety of dishes.
