Estate: Passed down from father to son for hundreds of years, Peter Sölva & Söhne is one of the oldest wineries in Caldero, Alto Adige, northern Italy. Records dating to 1731 document grape cultivation, showing the family has made and sold wine without a break for 10 generations. The 12 hectare estate focuses on indigenous grapes such as Schiava, Lagrein, Gewürztraminer [Traminer], along with Pinot Noir.
Winemaking: Grapes are from vineyards around Lake Caldaro that stretch to the village of Tramin. Vines are 35 years in age, in limestone, loam and sand soil.
Tasting Notes: Transparent dark ruby in colour, with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, soft spice and a hint of warm, dry earth. Vivid strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, rose petal and a vein of sour cherry are framed by light, silky tannins and bright acidity. An herbaceous streak compliments clean minerality on the fruity, dry finish. Amazing on its own, or with a wide variety of dishes.
Pairing Suggestions from the Winery: Antipasto, sweet cheeses, white meats and speck. [Astor Wines suggests strawberry and goat cheese salad.]
