Estate: Headed by 7th generation viticulturist Eugenio Gatti, La Miraja is ensconced in the original 11th century castle of Castagnole Monferrato. The armory of the castle was retrofitted as a wine cellar in the 1400’s and is still used by Gatti today. Located in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, many regard Castagnole Monferrato as the birthplace of Ruché, and rather fittingly, Eugenio Gatti has the oldest vineyard of Ruché grapes in existence. Production of Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato is incredibly limited, and it is only very recently that it has reached beyond the local environs.
Tasting Notes: Transparent dark ruby in colour, with vivid aromas of strawberry, raspberry and a drop of black currant liqueur. Wild berries and clove chase around black pepper and a wisp of smoky earth, followed by tingly acidity. A streak of minerality compliments the bone dry finish. Charismatic, engaging and mercurial, one of my favourite grapes and wine!
