Winery: The vivacious and always innovative Randall Grahm founded Bonny Doon Vineyard in 1983. Over the years it has become renowned for its pioneering spirit and multiple innovations within winemaking. Under Randal Grahm’s leadership, the vineyard is “the first to truly popularize Rhône grapes in California, to successfully work with cryo-extraction for sundry “Vins de Glacière, the first to utilize microbullage in California, the first to popularize screwcaps for premium wines, and, quite significantly, the first to embrace true transparency in labeling with its ingredient labeling initiative”. Bonny Doon wines are also known for their label art, incorporating work from prominent artists such as Ralph Steadman, Chuck House, Bascove and Gary Taxali. The sale of the largely successful brands Big House Red and Cardinal Zin in 2006 has allowed Randall to focus on biodynamic viticulture. He passionately believes that biodynamics give “us the best opportunity to produce the most distinctive and interesting, and in a word, the most vibrant wines possible”. Tasting Notes: Bright cranberry-red in colour with exuberant aromas of candied apple, raspberry, watermelon and cherry. Fruit saturated [cherry, raspberry and watermelon] with an herbaceous undercurrent that brings a savoury hint to the crushed white peppercorn and squeeze of lemon found on the dry finish.
