Winery: Belle Glos was established in 2001 by 5th generation winemaker Joe Wagner. He grew up working the family estate, the legendary Caymus Vineyards alongside his father Chuck Wagner. He created Belle Glos [named for his grandmother Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, co-founder of Caymus Vineyards] in order to “focus on vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs from throughout California’s best coastal regions”. While each vineyard is near the Pacific Ocean, “he climate differences are significant, varying with the amount of fog, wind, sunlight, and soil type at each site”. In memory of their friend and colleague Phyliss Turner, apportion of the proceeds from the sale of ‘Oeil de Perdrix’ Pinot Noir Blanc will be donated to the ongoing research in the cure for breast cancer.
Philosophy: “To express the genuine uniqueness of each vineyard site and to craft a true style of California Pinot Noir that is layered, complex, fruit-forward and rich.”
Winemaking: Wagner employs family methods passed down to him from over 35 years ago to craft the traditional French styled Pinot Noir Rosé ‘oeil-de-perdrix’ [meaning eye of the partridge and referring to its pink and copper colour]. Grapes were grown with the intention of crafting a Rosé wine. Part of the juice is fermented in French oak barrels in order to add texture and light spice. Rather then using a cork, its finished with a twist top “to preserve its crisp, clean aromas and flavors”.
Tasting Notes: Deep coppery red in colour with aromas of strawberry, minerals, and chive blossom. Bright acidity harmonizes with the core of sweet strawberry and watermelon flavours, whilst brisk citrus zest and dashes of concentrated fruit comprise the dry finish. Fantastic on its own or with a wide variety of summer dishes.
Pairing Suggestions from the Winery: “Perfect on its own as an aperitif, it also complements picnics on the patio and light dishes. Please enjoy this wine well chilled.”
