Brand: The Poggio Anima brand is a collaboration between “Montalcino Superstar” Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and his US importer, Vine Street Imports. Riccardo Campinoti is a staunch believer in that wine is made in the vineyard, not the winery. ‘Belial’ represents lawlessness and roughly translates to ‘without yoke’ in Hebrew. The name was chosen as a statement regarding “what has come to be known as ‘Supertuscans’ or ‘IGT’ is simply lawless”, with “People blending international varietals with indigenous varietals, etc”.
Philosophy: “To source the best vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines, nor leftover juice from a winery, but long term contracts with reputable growers.”
Winemaking: Grapes were sourced from organically farmed 25-45 year old vines in a single vineyard with clay and limestone soil in Montecucco, a newer wine region in southern Tuscany. Fermented 2 weeks on the skins in concrete tanks in order to extract rich colour and flavours. Aged in neutral, old oak barrels “so the Sangiovese fruit is the star”.
Tasting Notes: Dark garnet in colour with aromas of cherry, wildflowers and dusty earth. A fantastic, food friendly Sangiovese with a glaze of cherry and sour cherry over plum and forest floor notes, whilst leather, white peppercorn, earth and more cherry comprise the dry, fruity finish.
