I had the pleasure of participating in a Virtual Vines discussion with winemaker Scott Gares of Old York Cellars, sommelier Laurin Dorman and Mike Schwartz, founder of Hometown Heroes a non-profit organization that supports local communities in time of crisis. Old York Cellars is located in the Ringoes section of Hunterdon County and contains some of the oldest vineyards in New Jersey. Owner David Wolin currently has 12 acres of vineyards, cultivating a diverse selection including Barbera, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Syrah and Riesling. In addition to award winning wines and a lovely tasting room, they also hold special events such as art exhibits, yoga classes and Master Chef Dinners.
The wines below are all $18 and bear the vintage postcard label, when ordering you can customize what town or exit you would like on your label. Proceeds from every ‘What Exit Wines’ are donated to Hurricane Sandy relief in New Jersey. The idea was born when they found themselves having to use a generator to make their wines immediately after Sandy struck and were inspired to give back to New Jersey charities.
What Exit White
Pale gold in color with aromas of citrus zest and a hint of minerals. Pear and apple flavors were supported by a good streak of acidity along with subtle suggestions of soft sandalwood. Finishing clean and crisp, this is a fantastically glugable white blend that’s super versatile.
Blend of Chenin Blanc and Seyval Blanc
What Exit Blush
Cherry red in colour with wispy aromas of cinnamon, wild flowers and dusty earth. Cherry and watermelon flavors converged upon a dry finish with traces of crystalized ginger. A wonderfully refreshing Rose perfect for summer sipping.
Blend of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon
What Exit Red
Red-violet in color with aromas of black currant, vanilla and hints of cigar box spice. Light, silky smooth tannins joined cherry, black currant and traces of mint and earth, whilst nuances of spicy black peppercorn comprise the clean finish. A fantastic Old World style, light red blend bursting with fresh fruit and earth notes.
Blend of Merlot and Barbera
