Walking down the wine shop aisle, my eye immediately spotted the art of British artist Ralph Steadman on the Montes Twins Red Blend 2011 label. My stepfather was a dedicated fan of both the witty Steadman and the monumental Hunter S. Thompson, whom Steadman did numerous illustrations for, so I was instantaneously excited to give it a pour.
Montes Winery was founded in 1987-88 by 4 wine professionals, including winemaker Aurelio Montes, with a goal of producing “Chilean wines a quantum-leap higher in quality than the standards of the time”. With a philosophy that “80% of good wine comes from the vineyards and only 20% from the cellar”, Montes has assisted other Chilean wineries in crafting high quality wines and has become a renowned ambassador for Chile’s wine industry. With such an emphasis on the soil, it’s no coincidence that since the very start Montes has also been committed to protecting the environment. In addition to practicing sustainable methods in every area of production, they also have established a strong biodiversity initiative, conserving 400 hectares of forest, developing biological corridors for wildlife and plants, llamas and sheep not only reduce weeds in the vineyard, but also supply organic fertilizer.
Red-violet in colour with alluring aromas of blackberry and cherry jam. Bold flavours of dark fruits and earth transposed to white peppercorn, licorice, dried leaves and hints of vanilla in the lengthy finish, whilst pleasantly dry tannins unified each sip. A fantastic value, this is a friendly and homey glass that can pair with a wide variety of dishes. [It was perfect with chili relleno.]
*Winery recommends decanting for at least 30 minutes.
