Discovering good box wine is generally a disappointing adventure. I’ve had quite a few that were downright terrible. Thankfully, a few distributors/winemakers are beginning to make high quality, small vineyard, sustainably farmed, bag in box wines. Wineberry Côtes du Rhône Domaine le Garrignon is an absolutely fantastic bag version of their regular bottled Côtes du Rhône, and my most recent discovery, From the Tank Vin Rouge is a straightforward, easy drinking, and no one would ever think from a box, delightful wine.
From the Tank is a collaboration between François Ecot of Jenny & François Selections & Denis Deschamps of Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues. Jenny & François Selections is a New York based wine distributor founded in 2000. They focus on small vineyard wines and “winemakers who work like artisans, crafting a different wine each year. They do not impose a preconceived taste on their wines, but look to be surprised by what nature gives”.
Les Vignerons D’Estézargues is a co-operative cellar of 10 different growers in the small town of Estézargues, just west of Avignon. They became a pioneer for quality and individuality in their wines when in 1995 they began to vinify their wines separately and to make single cuvées from their best plots. They are now one of the most modern and progressive co-ops in the Southern Rhône, with a focus on sustainable agriculture, low yields and small batch vinification. They do not add external yeast, sugar or any enzymes in their production process, nor do they refine or filter their wines. From the Tank was crafted from vines 20-80 years old and is bagged and boxed on demand using 55% lower carbon footprint then traditional glass bottles.
Dark garnet in colour with rustic aromas of wild berries, woods and cigar box spice. Soft tannins complemented cherry, red currant and blackberry jam flavours, whilst spicy black peppercorn and hints of oak comprised the moderate finish. Convenient, budget friendly and super tasty, this is a must have for the fridge [and perfect for filling a Nalgene to take to the rink to watch hockey, and those occasions when you need to have “just one more glass”].
