Cantina Ericina is a commune of grape growers that was founded in the early 1970’s in order to centralize production and preserve the ancient vines and vineyards. Located in western Sicily and ringed by the Thyrrhenian and Mediterranean Seas, documents record a history of viticulture dating as far back as 1297. Today the group consists of 700 independent growers and about 1226 hectares of organic and sustainably farmed vineyards. Since the land was always farmed in an organic, sustainable manner, the Cantina was inspired to continue the tradition and has additionally implemented various biodynamic practices. Adopting a role as custodian of the vines, they have successfully safeguarded and revived many indigenous grape varieties, such as Frappato, Catarratto and Grillo. Tonnara is Cantina Ericina’s “entry level” label and is crafted in a modern style using indigenous Sicilian varietals.
Dark red-violet in colour with aromas of candied rose, raisin, and just the slightest traces of earthy barnyard funk. Earth notes and a lively acidity supported cherry and blackberry flavours, whilst dark chocolate and hints of raisin comprised the compact finish. Simple, pleasantly rustic with clean flavours, this is a versatile glass at the table.
