For our 2 year wedding anniversary my husband and I went ice-skating [we were married on the ice], had dinner at Otto Enoteca, and went to a Rangers Game at Madison Square Garden. All of you know how much I adore Otto for its amazing food, staff, wine classes, and their nearly 1000 bottle wine list. And whilst I was all fired up to pour through their wine list, I decided to let the sommelier surprise me. Whatever your enthusiasm level is for wine, it is always fantastic to know an excellent sommelier. They know their list inside and out, and when they are aware of your preferences, they can bring you incredibly unexpected gems. The sommelier at Otto knows I’m passionate about small, family run wineries and “off the beaten path” indigenous Italian grapes, so she selected Vini La Favola Fravolato IGP 2010 to accompany our cheese plate and veggie antipasti.
Vini La Favola is a family estate located in the far southeast of Sicily. It is headed by Corrado Gurrieri, his family has farmed the land for 3 generations, and today he shares his passion and commitment to the land with his wife and two daughters. In addition to having a solar-operated winery, they use only organic methods in both the vineyards and winery, and utilize only selected native yeasts during fermentation. In collaboration with universities and research institutes, part of the vineyards are dedicated to safeguarding and researching indigenous grapes and plants in order to preserve biodiversity. Just like his grandfather who when he became blind still pruned the vineyards just by touching the plants, Corrado is passionate about feeling the land and becoming one with the vine. He states “I don’t want to make the best wine in the world, but a wine that will contain all this and convey this little piece of land”. Such a beautiful belief that is unmistakably perceived in his outstanding wines. The Fravolato is dedicated to the “fresh and joyful character” of his daughters.
Brilliant red-violet in colour, with aromas of wild strawberry, minerals and hints of earthy, barnyard funk. Vibrant strawberry and cherry flavours were balanced by a bright acidity in the light to medium body, whilst traces of smoky balsamic notes comprised the compact finish. Well balanced and rustic, this is a refreshing glass that brings a cheerful, lively element to any meal.
