A rather vexing day inspired me to throw on some of my old school post-punk tunes and give a pour to Raw Power Shiraz 2011, owing to its somewhat edgy label and punk rock origins. Raw Power Shiraz is created by Punk Rocker Rawly Power along with winemakers Dominique Torzi and Tim Freeland in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. Torzi and Freeland work with a small group of growers and are known for their knowledge and access to top vineyards in the Adelaide Plains. The grapes for this single vineyard vintage were sourced from Varacalli Vineyard with an average vine age of 24 years.
Dark red-violet in colour with bountiful aromas of blackberry jam, smoky cedar, black pepper and candied violet. Concentrated flavours of blueberry and black current rode atop an undercurrent of svelte tannins in the full body, whilst smoky cedar, crushed black peppercorn and traces of menthol comprised the elongated finish. Bold and lush, this is a friendly glass that far exceeds its value price tag.
