Small Gully was founded in 1999 by vignerons Robert Bader, Darren Zimmermann and winemaker Stephen Black with the mission “to bring passion, experience and history” to their winery. Today the wines are crafted by the first and second generations of the Black family, whilst the grapes are sourced from vineyards the Zimmerman family have been tending to for nearly 85 years. The grapes for The Formula Robert’s Shiraz were sourced from a single vineyard of 46 year old vines that Robert Bader owns.
Dark garnet in colour with intense aromas of cayenne pepper, cherry and smoky cedar. Concentrated black cherry, black current and cranberry flavours joined bold tannins in the full body, whilst crushed black peppercorn, smoked oak and sweet raisin notes comprised the spicy, substantial finish. Dense and meaty, with a massive 15.9% alcohol content [whiskey wine is my personal term for these types of alcohol laden wines], this is remarkably easy drinking glass alongside a rich meal.
