Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2012

The Boekenhoutskloof Estate was established in 1776 and is located in the corner of the Franschhoek Valley. Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree and the name means “ravine of the Boekenhout”. In 1993 new owners [a group of businessmen including wine distributer Vinimark owner Tim Rands] set about transforming the 20 hectares of vineyards with sustainable methods, along with new cellars and equipment. Concentrating on preserving the world Heritage site the estate is located in, they actively participate in biodiversity and conservation initiatives. The Crested porcupine on the label, one of the many native inhabitants on the estate, is also the focus of a study that is researching their feeding behavior and movement that the vineyard is sponsoring. The Porcupine Ridge label is their range of “everyday wines…offering great value and superb drinking”.

Dark garnet in colour with aromas of blueberry, autumn woods, and toasted oak. Mulberry and blueberry flavours were joined by chestnut elements in the nearly full body, whilst crushed black peppercorn, dark chocolate and hints of toasted oak comprised the moderate finish. Young and sociable now, this will continue to develop plush, hearty layers of fruit and meaty spice.
