Spanish Garnacha is one of my go to choices when I’m on a tight budget. They are generally a guaranteed tasty value, weighing in much higher then the under $10 price tag. Bodegas Ateca is a joint project between the Gil Family Estates group and passionate, pioneering wine importer Jorge Ordonez. The vineyards are located 700-900 metres above sea level with an average vine age of 30-40 years old in the Calatayud region of northeastern Spain.
Inky red violet in colour with luring aromas of cigar box spice, vanilla and black cherry. Jammy blackberry and red currant flavours joined a tangy acidity in the nearly full body, whilst pink peppercorn, toasted oak and caramel comprised the moderate finish. A bit rugged around the edges, but pleasantly straightforward, this is a likable glass good for a wide variety of dishes.
