Shingleback ‘Black Bubbles’ Sparkling Shiraz NV

My best friend lives a few states away so we only see each once a year at best. She is here for a week visiting her mom and we are taking full advantage of that, engaging in a couple of festive nights out. Waiting to meet her at the bar, I selected Shingleback ‘Black Bubbles’ Sparkling Shiraz as a merry starting point for the evening. Davey Estate Vineyard is a family owned estate located at the southern end of the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. Kym and John Davey took over the estate that was originally farmed by their grandfather, with a mission to produce “affordable, quality wines that express the true character of McLaren Vale”. They practice sustainable viticulture, focus on respecting the fruit, and take a minimalist approach to crafting their wines. The Shingleback label consists of wines that are sourced primarily from the Davey Estate vineyard and are crafted to be assessable, fruit-forward and food friendly wines. ‘Black Bubbles’ is a non-vintage wine blended from multiple vintages of Shiraz in order “to create complexity and consistency in style”.

Inky purple accompanied by bright red-violet bubbles with the aroma of grape jam on toast. Juicy black currant and pomegranate flavours abounded in the bubbly body, whilst pleasantly dry tannins in the effervescent finish supported sweet honey and traces of chocolate. A lively and charming glass that is incredibly versatile; fantastic as an aperitif, great with a wide variety of dishes, wonderful with chocolate, and lovely for sipping on its own.
