Vernatsch or Schiava is one of my favourite wines. Fantastic at the table or on its own, displaying fresh berries with a touch of earth and spice it is incredibly versatile and can even be chilled slightly for a wonderfully refreshing summer red. The downside is that it can be vexingly difficult to find in the States especially outside of metro areas, therefore I take every opportunity to enjoy it when I am in NYC.
Kellerei Kaltern winery is located around the region of Lake Kaltern in Alto Adige, northern Italy. With a motto of “Where wine is one of the family”, it consists of over 300 hectares of vineyards farmed by 440 members. The Pfarrhof is part of their “Estates” Collection, the grapes were sourced from old vine vineyards [30-50 years in age] located on the west and north shores of Lake Kaltern.
Dark ruby-red in colour, with aromas of strawberry and earth. Flavours of strawberry and raspberry preserves sailed seamlessly over an undercurrent of rich earthy elements in the light to medium body, whilst hints of bitter almond and dried strawberry lingered between each sip. Straightforward and refreshing, this is a charming glass with appetizers or light dishes. [It was superb with pizza!]
