My husband and I had dinner at Angelo’s Prime Bar & Grill, in addition to having a terrific wine list, [especially for upstate NY] it is located a very short equidistance from our house and the movie theatre. It becomes the perfect spot for us to enjoy bottles not stocked in the local wine shops, and have a yummy snack or dinner before the movie. I selected Anne Pichon Syrah Sublime 2009 to accompany my pre-Superman dinner of Russian deviled eggs and ricotta agnolotti with fennel blossom.

Purchased in 2008 by Marc and Anne Pichon, Domaine le Murmurium is located in the Cote de Ventoux village of Mormoiron in the southeastern Rhone region. Murmurium is Latin in origin, meaning “the buzzing song of bees” which are depicted on their labels. Marc and Anne have expanded the estate by acquiring more old vineyards, increasing the size of the domaine from 13 to 21 hectares. All of the vineyards are cultivated using organic methods, the soil is tilled manually, all harvesting is done by hand, no pesticides or chemicals are used and only native yeasts are used in fermentation. The mission of the estate is “to maintain a style of rich, ripe and hand-crafted wines through careful vineyard management, low yields and late harvesting”.

Dark purple in colour, aromas of cherry, black pepper and brambly bushes rose from the glass. Wild berries joined earthy elements and traces of balsamic in the medium to full body. Spicy crushed black peppercorn, hints of vanilla bean and wisps of smoke comprised the lengthy finish. Delightfully intense and embodying a 15% alcohol content, this is an engaging glass that is superbly easy drinking.
