To accompany my pizza with caramelised brussel sprouts, loads of fresh ricotta cheese and roasted hot peppers, I selected Pine Ridge Forefront Cabernet Sauvignon 2010. Pine Ridge winery was founded in 1978 by Gary Andrus. Today the estate encompasses 200 acres across 5 appellations and strives to reflect an Old World approach to winemaking by highlighting “the exceptional qualities of the diverse estate vineyards”. They are committed to protecting the environment and practice sustainable viticulture; they employ both mechanical and hand cultivation, pest and weed control is managed by targeting only specific species allowing “biodiversity to assist in vector control”. The grapes for the Forefront blend were sourced primarily from Napa county vineyards [83%] and the rest from Lake County.
Dark garnet in colour, aromas of raisin, black cherry, baking spices and toasty oak rose from the glass. Baked black cherry and blueberry pie flavours were underscored by rich mocha elements in the full body. Spicy black pepper, sweet vanilla and toasted oak comprised the lengthy finish. A blend of vivacious fruit and spice flavours, this is an accessible, California style, crowd pleasing bottle.
