I picked up Rock.Face Syrah 2009 since I fancied the label and I am always on the lookout for budget friendly Syrah. Rock.Face Syrah was produced and bottled by Gold Cloth Winery, which is part of Conway Family Wines. They are a family owned and operated company committed to protecting and preserving both the land and wildlife and therefore practice sustainable methods in their vineyards. The Rock.Face Syrah is a “tribute to American Heritage”, a nod to the Gold Coast pioneers, their work ethic and integrity. The grapes were sourced from a range of vineyards in and around Santa Barbara in the Central Coast.

Dark red-violet in colour, aromas of chocolate ganache covered raspberries and espresso rose from the glass. Jammy raspberry and blackberry flavours were supported by mocha notes and velvety soft tannins in the full body. Spicy crushed black peppercorn merged into gamey, meaty elements and traces of smoky cedar in the lengthy finish. Plush, easy drinking and a good value, this is a glass that you will keep reaching for.
