Mas de Guiot Cabernet-Syrah 2009

My sister came over with Mas de Guiot Cabernet-Syrah 2009 to accompany dinner of mac and many cheeses and barbecued tempeh. I was enthusiastic to give it a pour since I had enjoyed their Grenache-Syrah blend. Domaine Guiot is located in the Costières de Nimes and was purchased by the husband and wife team of Sylvia and François Cornut in 1976. François is passionate about sustainable agriculture and has never used any chemical products in his vineyards. Sylvia runs the winery with assistance from their 2 sons. She ferments all the grapes separately, by varietal and vineyard site in stainless steel tanks. Her motto is “If François brings me good fruit, then I can make good wine.” The Grenache-Syrah is categorized as Vin de Pays du Gard only because they choose to include the grape names on the label.

Inky dark violet in colour, aromas of black currant and grape jam on toast rose from the glass. Black cherry and black currant flavours were supported by dense raisin and bitter dark chocolate notes in the full body. Spicy black pepper, toasty oak and traces of smoked meat comprised the velvety finish. Well-structured and robust, this is a fantastic companion at the table.
