Filón Garnacha 2011

Grenache is another one of my favourite grapes. One of the most widely planted grapes in the world, it displays wonderful fruitiness, spice and body along with soft tannins. Spain is renowned for producing a wide range of budget friendly Garnacha, so I’m always on the lookout for new arrivals in the wine shops. Bodegas Terra Sigilata is the producer of Filón Garnacha, it’s located in the Calatayud, one of Spain’s most progressive and promising wine regions. The Calatayud is known for its prevalence of high elevation vineyards and old Garnacha vines; Bodegas Terra Sigilata is located at one of the highest points in region and was named after the Roman ceramic factory that existed in the area.

Inky dark red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of grape jam, rain-fresh minerals and traces of candied ginger swirled about in the glass. Cherry, red current and blackberry flavours were joined by nuances of herbaceous basil and lemongrass elements in the medium to full body. Spicy black pepper and hints of sweet, smoky incense comprised the velvety finish. Straightforward yet brimming with an engaging harmony of flavours, this is a fantastic value and wonderful for the table or sipping on its own.
