Last night I found myself fancying an uncomplicated, fruit forward type of glass, so I gave a pour to Cycles Gladiator Merlot 2010. I have enjoyed every Cycles Gladiator varietal that I have tried, and always have at least one bottle, usually the Cycles Gladiator Pinot Noir on hand at all times. Cycles Gladiator is part of the fantastic Hahn Family of Wines. They created the accessible, value label to pay tribute to the spirit of freedom and happiness that pervaded Europe in the late 19th century, known for its many “inventions and improvements to daily life”. The grapes are sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in the rich farmlands of the Lodi appellation that comply with The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. The Hahn family emphasizes soil and water health, biodiversity and employee well-being. Both the Cycles Winery and Visitor Center are located in one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in Lodi.
Dark garnet in colour, aromas of cherry, spicy smoked peppers and sweet oak rose from the glass. Baked cherry and blackberry pie flavours joined rich chocolate notes in the medium to full body. Spicy pink peppercorn, toasted oak and sweet caramel elements comprised the moderate finish. Jammy and velvety with a lovely spicy backbone, this is an easy drinking glass that empties rather swiftly.
