I picked up The Magnificent Wine Company Syrah 2008 due to its bold, unconventional label and that its winemaker is celebrated for his higher end Syrahs. The Magnificent Wine Company is a collaboration between Precept wines and renowned Syrah producer Charles Smith. Precept wines began in 1980; by 2003 they had developed into the largest privately owned wine company in Washington State with brands such as Pendulum, Sock Eye, Willow Crest and Red Knot in Australia. Charles Smith founded The Magnificent Wine Company in 2004 with the goal of “bringing outstanding wines into people’s homes at an affordable, everyday price.” ‘The Originals’ wines are made from 100% varietal grape, without blending or filtering. The grapes for this particular vintage were sourced from the Phil Lane Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope in Columbia Valley.
Dark purple with violet around the rim, after decanting aromas of blueberry, leather and wildflowers swirled about in the glass. Blackberry and black cherry flavours were joined by earthy elements and solid tannins in the medium body. Spicy pink peppercorn and lingering strawberry notes comprised the moderate finish. Although on the lighter side for a Syrah, this is an easy drinking glass great at the table.
