I picked up Mas de Guiot Grenache-Syrah 2010 simply because it was an inexpensive table wine that appeared as though it had the potential to be quite tasty and a great value. Domaine Guiot is located in the Costières de Nimes, and was purchased by the husband and wife team of Sylvia and François Cornut in 1976. François is passionate about sustainable agriculture and has never used any chemical products in his vineyards. Sylvia runs the winery with assistance from their 2 sons. She ferments all the grapes separately, by varietal and vineyard site in stainless steel tanks. Her motto is “If François brings me good fruit, then I can make good wine.” The Grenache- Syrah is categorized as Vin de Pays du Gard only because they choose to include the grape names on the label.
Dark red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of sweet blackberry and green olives rose from the glass. Blueberry and cherry flavours were supported by hints of earthy notes in the medium body. Spicy pink peppercorn and traces of yellow curry spice comprised the moderate finish. Straightforward and easy drinking, this is a lovely glass for the table.
