My sister was over for the night and I had the sneaking suspicion that we would end up meandering our way through more then one bottle of wine. So I decided to give a pour to a singular grape varietal of the same vintage, but one a New World wine and the other Old World in order to compare and contrast the resulting character. After perusing thru my wine racks, I selected Pic & Chapoutier Syrah Crozes-Hermitage 2010 and The Hedonist Shiraz 2010.

Walter Clappis has been making wine for 31 years and his considered one of Australia’s most distinguished winemakers. Hedonist Wines is headed by Walter, his daughter Kimberly and her partner James. They practice biodynamic and sustainable methods with an emphasis on soil health and a diverse population of soil biology; traditional winemaking methods are employed such as open fermentation and basket presses. They take a minimalistic approach to winemaking with a philosophy of “good wines are made in the vineyard”.

Deep red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of blueberry, black pepper, warm oak and rose petal rose from the glass. Dense flavours of black cherry and blackberry were dusted with traces of dark chocolate, brown sugar and bolstered by a bright acidity in the full body. Spicy black pepper, toasty oak and dried cherry notes comprised the plush finish. Well-structured and concentrated, each velvety sip is endowed with an easy drinking sensibility that will keep you reaching for more.
