Hauner Salina Rosso 2010

The night before we left for Texas was expectedly overloaded with last minute errands and packing. Neither my husband or myself are early morning people and since we needed to be up at 4am for our flight, we decided to simplify dinner and order in from our favourite Italian place. I had ordered their fantastic meatless antipasto and fancied an easy drinking, simple glass, yet wanted a bit of personality to enjoy also. I reached for Hauner Salina Rosso 2010. Founded by painter and legendary winemaker Carlo Hauner on 20 hectares of volcanic soil on the island of Salina in the Aeolian Islands off the northern cost of Sicily, today the estate is headed by his son Carlo Jr. He continues in his furthering the innovative work of his father and establishing the island’s wines and history.

Dark ruby red in colour, aromas of warm autumn spices, cherry and ashy minerals swirled about in the glass. Dried strawberry and tart cherry flavors were driven by an undercurrent of silky smooth black tea tannins. Earthy minerals and traces of raisin and dried cherry comprised the pleasantly brisk finish. Smooth and rustic, this is a charming guest at the table.
