Neither my sister nor I could recall exactly when, but at some point within the past couple of months she had brought over Pennywise Cabernet Sauvignon 2010. For one reason or another we always chose another bottle instead and it sullenly sat in my wine rack until last night when we finally decided to give it a pour. The Other Guys is headed by August Sebastiani, of Sebastiani Vineyards and Winery fame. When his family’s company was sold in 2001 to Constellation Brands, he was motivated along with his sister Mia to establish a company that would “continue their family’s reputation for quality winemaking for generations to come”.
Dark purple-garnet in colour, after aerating aromas of cherry and cinnamon pastries rose from the glass. Loud flavours of blackberry, tart black cherry and cranberry were joined by hints of chocolate in the somewhat muddled medium to full body. Spicy black pepper and smoky oak notes comprised the moderate finish. Although my sister and I made it through the bottle, it is rather “generic” in character, its cloying, nearly cough-syrup like quality was the only memorable attribute.
