Domaine Violon Côtes du Rhône 2011

As I’ve mentioned before, I adore Côtes du Rhône wines, and I tend to find it rather difficult to pass on the really inexpensive bottles, as they can turn out to be fabulously tasty and a fantastic value. When I spied Domaine Violon Côtes du Rhône 2011 for a mere $7 at one of my favourite wine shops, it immediately went into my shopping basket. When researching for my review, I discovered very limited information regarding this bottle; I searched the Domaine, the bottler and the importer and only came up with that it is a selection of Monsieur Touton Selection Ltd.; an American wine distributer and importer located on the East Coast and founded in 1983 by Guillaume Touton.

Dark transparent ruby in colour, after aerating aromas of incredibly summer-ripe raspberry and warm cigar box spices rose from the glass. Bright fruit flavours of raspberry, strawberry and red currant were joined by pleasantly astringent green tea tannins in the medium body. Spicy pink peppercorn, toasted oak and traces of chocolate lingered in the moderate finish. A wonderful value, this is a delightfully simple, easy drinking glass great for everyday sipping.
