Château Peneau Premiѐres Côtes de Bordeaux 2006

The Premiѐres Côtes de Bordeaux is a long, narrow appellation nearly 40 miles long, located along the right bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux. It is a very prolific region covering a band of 37 communes, with mostly red wines produced, and these are generally known for their strong fruit flavours and superb value. It’s not too often that I run across these in my local wine shops, so I was rather enthusiastic when I found Château Peneau Premiѐres Côtes de Bordeaux 2006 at the fantastic wine shop near my sister’s house.

Château Peneau is a 29 hectare family owned estate located in the heart of the Premiѐres Côtes de Bordeaux region, between Saint Emilion and Sauternes. Since Roman times, famous wines have been produced here. The Château, wine storehouse and chapel all date back to 1515. Today, the fourth generation winemaking Douence family blends traditional and modern methods in order to produce wines that “are high-quality and accessible to all wine-lovers looking to be pleasantly surprised.”

Brick garnet in colour, after decanting for about an hour aromas of cherry pie and wisps of smoky cedar swirled about in the glass. Jammy, baked cherry and blackberry pie flavours abounded in the medium body. Spicy black pepper joined sweet, toasty oak and traces of earthy, gamey elements in the lengthy finish. Fruity and earthy, this is a fantastic glass for the table.
