Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau 2012

Beaujolais Nouveau is released the third Thursday of each November. It is a young wine, aged only for 6 weeks that is also meant to be consumed young. It’s fruity with a light body and very food friendly, making it a delight to accompany varied holiday menus. Meandering about one of my local wine shops, I found a display of Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau 2012 that had been put on sale, just in time for Christmas.

The Joseph Drouhin Domaine consists of 182.5 acres, making it one of the largest estates in Burgundy. They have found organic and biodynamic viticulture to be the methods that best allow them to cultivate their goal of expressing” the exact character of each terrior”.  They believe in utilizing “natural answers to natural problems”; vine treatments are herb-based, natural predators are used rather than chemical products, and plowing is done by horse, just to name a few.

Dark ruby in colour, aromas of cherry, strawberry and blueberry radiated from the glass. Tangy black cherry and jammy blueberry flavours abounded in the medium body. A pleasant acidity mingled with white pepper in the moderate finish. Concentrated and fresh, this is a simple, fruity, inexpensive glass great for the table.
