With my sister’s love of Italian wines, it was no surprise to see that she had an open bottle of Giacosa Fratelli Nebbiolo d’Alba 2010 waiting for me upon my arrival at her house. The Giacosa Fratelli Estate has been passed down from father to son for hundreds of years, with an underlying philosophy of “naturalness and quality”. Passionate about the health of their vineyards and producing wine that “repays the trust and passion of all those who drink it”, they believe in a “friendly vineyard”. Their production processes are based on renewable resources: power for the estate is generated from solar panels, rainwater is managed and channeled, grape skins used as fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides have been eliminated, by properly maintaining the woodland on the estate as compensation for their CO2 emissions, and the use of lightweight bottles.
Cranberry-garnet with a brick-orange rim, aromas of dried violets and damp leaves swirled about in the glass. Dried cherry and raspberry flavours joined black tea tannins in the light to medium body. Bitter almond, espresso and earthy leather elements comprised the moderate finish. Dry and lively, this is a delightful glass for the table.
