Zestos Garnacha Old Vines 2011

Zestos with Edward Hopper American Landscape
Enjoying a Spanish glass for the 3rd evening in a row, I realized that I’ve been on a bit of a Spanish wine binge. It’s totally logical, since I’ve been on a tighter than usual budget for the past week, and Spanish wines are renowned for their quality and value. As I gave a pour to Zestos Garnacha Old Vines 2011 I was hoping to be the beneficiary of that famed high quality. Zestos was produced by Manuel Martinez, a 3rd generation winemaker whose family has been producing organic wines in Madrid for many years. Although winemakers are creating innovative and character driven wines, the area has flown under the radar of both American and Europeans for the most part, contributing to their amazing value. Madrid has a history of winemaking dating back to the 13th century, however the Madrid Denomination of Origin wasn’t established until 1990. 90% of Madrid wines are made from organically grown grapes, and the vineyards flourish with old vines.

Red-violet in colour, aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry  and candied violets radiated from the glass. Aged in cement and stainless steel, bright, fruity flavours of red current, strawberry and baked cherry abounded in the silky smooth, medium body. Rich chocolate and hints of spicy licorice elongated the pleasantly subdued finish. Fruity and plush, this is an outstanding value, fantastic for the table or on its own.
