I adore Zinfandel. It can be light, fruity and fresh like a Beaujolais, or dense, spicy and complex like a Cabernet Sauvignon. Friendly and easy drinking, I tend to reach for a budget friendly Zinfandel when I want an accessible, yet somewhat substantial glass, so last night I gave a a pour to Zig Zag Zin 2009. In 2004 the Mendocino Wine Co. purchased Parducci Wine Cellars, Mendocino County’s oldest winery. Mendocino Wine Co. had a goal of expanding the success of the family run winery and focusing on the strength of the land and growers as a whole. With a motto of “Sustaining what’s best. Creating what’s next.” Mendocino Wine Co. is committed to sustainable viticulture and business practices, responsible land stewardship and supporting and protecting the environment and local farmers.
Dark translucent garnet in colour, aromas of rose petal, raspberry and forest floor emanated from the glass. Fruity flavours of raspberry, red current and tart cherry were entwined with nuances of fresh anise in the medium body. Spicy pink peppercorn and traces of toasty cedar comprised the elongated finish. Straightforward and easy drinking, this is a fine, everyday glass.
Zinfandel, 100% Mendocino grapes [I could not confirm varietal percentage]
