Initial tastings are indicating a fantastic vintage for 2010 Chianti Classico. Weather for the year fluctuated greatly; the winter was very cold, spring was unusually cool and wet, but June and July were extremely hot. The temperature again dropped to lower than normal levels in August and September, which created a slow maturation process and a very late harvest. The Chianti Classico Consorzio impressions are that 2010 is “a vintage rich in aromas and scents and a great structure conferred by optimal acidity levels, raising hopes in a Chianti Classico for aging”. So far professional tastings have confirmed intense colour and aroma, good concentration, wonderful depth, structure and balance.
I have enjoyed Castello Banfi Chianti Classico 2010 and found it to be excellent, and a wonderful example of all the excitement surrounding the vintage. I’m looking forward to enjoying many more 2010 Chianti Classicos.
