Bogle Vineyards Essential Red 2009

 

The past couple of weeks the farmer’s market has been brimming with a fantastic selection of all sorts of peppers, from ridiculously hot to nearly sugar-glazed sweet. I’m a firm believer that roasted pepper purée can compliment just about any dish, so I’ve been taking full advantage of the pepper abundance. Whilst preparing some totally wild looking striped peppers for my smoked gouda quinoa patties I fancied a spicy, yet fruity bottle to coincide with the smoky, sweet heat I was going to get from my purée. I decidedly reached for a Zinfandel-heavy blend since my sister was joining us for dinner and  that is one of her favourite grapes, and gave a pour to Bogle Vineyards Essential Red 2009.


Bogle Vineyards are a 6th generation family owned vineyard. In addition to practicing sustainable viticulture, they are also Lodi Rules Certified Green, which is a California 3rd party certified sustainable wine growing program that promotes biodiversity, soil and water health and employee well-being. Along with their own sustainable practices such as sourcing corks from only family owned sustainable farms, Bogle encourages wine growers that they source supplemental grapes from to employ sustainable methods by paying them a bonus if they are Certified Green. With a mission to leave the land in better condition than how they received it, they “understand that nurturing our land and preserving its vitality is not only essential for our family, but also the world, so that future generations can enjoy many harvests for centuries to come.”

Dark red-violet in colour, aromas of sweet cherries and currents drizzled with caramel and dusted with black pepper radiated from the glass. Jammy blackberry and red current flavours were embraced by rich, smoky vanilla notes in the medium-full body. A velvety, spicy mix of black peppercorn, licorice and clove was entwined with traces of toasty oak in the lengthy finish. Sweet, round, juicy fruit flavours and luscious spice create a spectacular glass for the table or all on its own.
