I was preparing a yummy autumn dinner of butternut squash ravioli with an Irish cheddar and smoked gouda sauce, veggie chorizo and farmers market mixed green salad. I knew I fancied a zinfandel to accompany the spicy and smoky sweet flavours, so I plucked Hayman & Hill Zinfandel Reserve Selection Dry Creek Valley 2007 from my wine bar rack. David Hayman, Blackstone Winery’s Senior Vice President of Operations, and Dennis Hill, Chief Winemaker for Blackstone Winery in Sonoma County founded the Hayman & Hill brand with the goal of producing ”regional wines of remarkable value”. They are able to take advantage of their reputation, experience and contacts in order to source grapes from premium appellations in California. Their wines have been recognized for their remarkable value and prime appellations; in 2009 Wine & Spirits honored them with the ‘American Value Brand of the Year’ award.
Transparent dark garnet in colour, rich aromas of black cherry, cigar box spices and vanilla swirled about in the glass. Lush black current, blackberry and cherry flavours flecked with sweet vanilla abounded in the smooth, medium body. Toasty oak, spicy cinnamon and pink peppercorns were entwined with velvety raisin and traces of cocoa in the lengthy finish. Luscious and easy drinking, this is a superb value and a crowd pleasing glass.
