Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

The wine of choice at my husband’s amazing grandfather’s 80th birthday party was Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. The very first winery in Napa Valley, Prussian immigrant Charles Krug established his self-named winery in 1861. Today although still a family winery, Charles Krug is run under the guidance of Peter Mondavi Sr. The family is dedicated to sustainable farming and fusing modern techniques with traditional French methods. The winery focuses on producing Bordeaux style wines that are fruity, yet balanced and food friendly.

Inky dark purple in colour, rich aromas of sweet cigar box spice and juicy blackberry swirled about in the glass. Plush and silky black current, blackberry and spicy plum flavours flourished in the nearly full body.  Spicy black pepper and smoky oak notes mingled with traces of smooth chocolate in the lengthy finish. An accessible combination of fruit and spice with big flavours, this is a straightforward, crowd pleasing bottle.
